Abstract
Climate neutrality and resilience in peri-urban areas have emerged as critical challenges for Europe, as these regions face increasing environmental pressures, fragmented governance structures, and strong industrial activity. Addressing these challenges requires integrated approaches that combine technological innovation, sustainable planning, and inclusive governance, enabling regions to transition towards low-carbon, climate-resilient development pathways.
SpurUP (Sustainable Peri-Urban framework for Climate Neutral development) aims to support this transition by developing and validating a holistic framework that integrates net-zero technologies, circular economy solutions, and participatory governance models. Through the establishment of Local Green Deals, the project fosters collaboration between public authorities, industry, and local communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and enhance social equity.
The project adopts a Living Lab approach, where innovative digital tools and technological solutions are designed, tested, and refined in real-life conditions across pilot peri-urban regions. The validated solutions are further replicated in additional European regions, ensuring scalability, transferability, and long-term impact.
IANUS' Role
In the SpurUP project, IANUS provides technical support for the development and validation of digital tools, contributing to data-driven decision-making and the replication of solutions for climate-neutral peri-urban development.
